Chinatown Restaurant has been open in the Far West neighborhood of Austin since 1986, but it was only six months ago that owner Ronald Cheng added dim sum to the menu. We visited one recent Saturday to take in all that Cheng’s unique version of dim sum has to offer—from specialties like espresso-glazed ribs served in a cappuccino mug with a dollop of whipped cream, to traditional favorites like the Shanghai pork soup dumplings, to the more creative and beautiful items like yummy pastries in the shape of mice (they’re really supposed to be rats in honor of the Year of the Rat, but who’s going to eat something that looks like a rat? So instead they look like cute little mice.) We were left entirely full and completely happy, and a little addicted to tell the truth. We’ll be going back next week—perhaps we’ll see you there?
